True and Sweet Story:  On June 9, 3 year old Lorenza graduated from her pre-kinder class.  Her grandparents asked her, "Where can we take you to celebrate?"  She answered without hesitation, "Libros, Libros Libros."

Recently arrived and old favorites from Random House (Sonia and Random House, thank you for your suggestions and encouragement!):

The definitive narrative of battle by a Marine rifleman (that's an infantryman to you Army squawks).  Mr. Sledge returned after WWII to become a biology teacher, and he wrote this book in an empirical, obsevational manner like the scientific observer he is.   He spared us no details.  You begin reading of the horrors, intensified by the dispassionate descriptions, and you are made of stone if you don't get a lump in your throat when he describes the killing of his beloved captain by a Japanese sniper.
For those who have "been there," you know this is the real deal.

In 1925, the legendary British explorer Percy Fawcett ventured into the Amazon jungle, in search of a fabled civilization. He never returned.

Note from Random House:

Here is one of the most riveting first-person accounts ever to come out of World War II. Robert Leckie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In Helmet for My Pillow we follow his odyssey, from basic training on Parris Island, South Carolina, all the way to the raging battles in the Pacific, where some of the war’s fiercest fighting took place. Recounting his service with the 1st Marine Division and the brutal action on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu, Leckie spares no detail of the horrors and sacrifices of war, painting an unvarnished portrait of how real warriors are made, fight, and often die in the defense of their country.  (Webmaster's note - in the Marine Corps it is "Boot camp."  Basic training is for the Army girlee scouts).

In the years before the First World War, the great European powers were ruled by three first cousins: King George V of Britain, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Together, they presided over the last years of dynastic Europe and the outbreak of the most destructive......
